Merry Christmas from the Chamber of Trade

high street image2 300x225 Merry Christmas from the Chamber of TradeThey say the shops turned over £4 billion this weekend alone – who stayed up and counted it all?! I am pleased that expenditure has increased and people are spending today, but they will cut back in January and February – a good time to tighten the belt, but also a good time to network and market your business.

Weston-super-Mare Chamber of Trade are very pro-active, linking with lots of local organisations, including Star Radio.

A slow recovery is now predicted and the recession is over!! That is a general statement, and while I think it is true, this is not the case for all businesses. Some still have to take stock. I will say however, if you grab the nettle you could speed up the recovery by 50%. Plan to grow now.

And finally:

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, but more than that we wish you a healthy New Year. Remember your business is like a trumpet – if you don’t put anything in, you won’t get anything out!!!

The Old Thatched Cottage

theoldthatchedcottage1 The Old Thatched CottageThis is a review of the Old Thatched Cottage, it has been written based on a Christmas Meal experienced by the author recently.

The Old Thatched Cottage has an interesting history which starts in the 18th Century, when Reverend Leeves of Wrington built a holiday home right on the beach. Today the cottage is a grade 2 listed building and an award winning restaurant run by owner Maria who is welcoming to old and new faces alike.

The Venue
The restaurant has a small bar and lounge, and a well laid out seating area considering the constricting size of the building. The kitchen is set to the side behind the restaurant-side bar and is open so you can watch your food being prepared whilst you sip your wine.

Starter
For my starter I enjoyed the Chef’s Homemade Pâté which came elegantly presented on the plate with the Pâté in a small ramekin topped with butter that had been melted and then left to set, surrounded by small toasted slices of a french baguette. The starter was one of the nicest Pâtés that I have experienced and wasn’t too filling as to spoil the main course.

Main Course
I had opted for the traditional Turkey dinner (You have a choice of two different Christmas party menus which both have an array of Starters and Desserts to choose from) which came with cuts of perfectly cooked turkey, chipolata sausages wrapped in bacon, a homemade chestnut stuffing, roasted and new potatoes along with seasonal vegetables and a side of cranberry sauce. When it comes to a Christmas dinner, all my comparisons have to be made to the dinner I enjoy at the Stone family home once a year and the Old Thatched Cottage get top marks as their dinner was exactly as a Christmas roast should be.

Dessert
I decided to go for their homemade cheesecake instead of the traditional options of Christmas Pudding or Mince Pies, mostly because this was the second year having our staff christmas party here and the previous year I remember commenting that it was possibly the best cheesecake I had ever tasted! So I was in for a surprise when I took my first mouthful this year, not only was it the best slice of cheesecake I had ever tasted, it was even nicer than I remember from last year so well done again to Maria and the team for surpassing my expectations!

The Service
The staff are incredibly warm and inviting from the moment you step in the door to when you leave, you feel very welcome and the service is done with a smile, something that is proving more and more difficult to find in some of local restaurants these days.

Conclusion
Overall I would highly recommend eating at the Old Thatched Cottage, I believe they are in the few elite of high quality enjoyable restaurants that the people of Weston deserve and so will be giving the Old Thatched Cottage 10 out of 10.

The Business Review December 09

Mortgages
As many as one in three customers are paying more than they need to for mortgages. There are so many special offers at the moment and it is a great time to get a free check to see if you are on the right package with insurance also being far too high on some policies.

This applies to business as well as domestic mortgages – Get a free 30 minutes check free of charge for peace of mind – telephone the North Somerset Enterprise Agency 01934 418118.

Innovation
Innovation and diversification are major factors in who will cope with the recession, even during these hard times we see plenty of examples of local companies who are doing well and bucking the trend. In fact many of the world’s largest corporations were founded during times of economic downturn, such as Microsoft and Disney! Some of the positive aspects of a recession are labour is easy to find due to large amounts of redundancies, competition is less fierce due to cost-cutting and rivals going out of business means more trade for those still operating. What is your business doing to stand out from the crowd?

Health & Safety Straightjacket!!
David Cameron is currently reviewing Health and Safety Legislation, and is looking to clear out alot of the bureaucracy involved to help us run our businesses. Its election time in a couple of months so maybe common sense will return!!!

VAT
VAT rates return to 17.5% on 1 January 2010, so remember to update all your books and systems for any finances or invoices due beyond the 31st December 2009

The Grand Pier
The world will be watching our pier which is growing every day, and is on track for completion for the summer season in 2010. We all need to use this – if they can rebuild the pier, we can all rebuild our business – onward and upward!

Weston-super-Mare Tourist Information Film.

Perhaps the most well known YouTube video locally, this comical parody of a local tourist information is well thought and and keeps you amused all the way through, a brilliant effort by Youtube user bluecrayon77.

Grand pier fire at Weston-Super-Mare 2008

There are literally hundreds of videos of the Grand Pier burning down in 2008, so when we saw this one we were impressed with the style of filming and the way the video was put together.

Building the Grand Pier 1903 – 1904

Our final video was uploaded by the owners of the Grand Pier and is an interesting look at rarely seen photos of the original Grand Pier being built in 1903 (the first pavilion caught fire and was destroyed in 1933).

Social networking tip for businesses to take into the New Year #1

The vast majority of people, who use Twitter, rarely update through the website; they choose to update using Mobile devices. Potential Brand and business-damaging updates are now up in seconds. Anytime. Anywhere. Just think what that could mean for your Christmas and New Year customer service, good or bad.

Too many local businesses lack Brand-strategy

In the current climate, it’s never been more important for businesses to live and breathe their Brand. It’s who they are; it’s everything they do. After all, we are all nothing less than ‘Global Microbrands’. Everything about a business and its service is built around an understanding of it; the way it acts, the way it communicates with its customers, its partners and affiliates, staff…everyone. So why is it that so many local businesses seem to be lacking a vision for their Brand strategy?

Brand strategy for many local businesses and services seems to stretch to a facebook fanpage and a few facebook events and groups. . . perhaps even a website and an email address. Though all of these identify what the business is, and often what it offers. None of them form a Brand, or a strategy, or a direction. Many don’t even have a brand promise. Even words are brands, and local businesses appear to be failing to notice the power, words/advertising can play in driving business and moving forward in a troubled climate. Without a relevant and powerful Brand strategy, I find it difficult to see how they can survive.
