Weston College student’s business goes international

Ian Banwell 300x199 Weston College students business goes internationalA Weston College student is celebrating the success of his flourishing coach travel business that he started at 13 years old and which is now set to go international.

Ian Banwell, who is still only 17, employs six people in his business, Banwell South West, which offers day trips for the over 50s.

He is still so young he cannot even drive and he’s too busy with his business to take lessons.

The teenager launched Banwell South West five years ago when the coach firm his grandmother, Joan, enjoyed trips with folded.

Despite being just 13 he has gained a loyal clientele with his carefully organised weekly trips around the South West, Windsor, London and Christmas markets.

Now he has nearly 4,500 customers and just signed a contract with Crosville Motor Services in Weston to launch holidays in the UK and Europe.

Ian said: “The business has flourished. I go on each trip myself to ensure they run smoothly and get to really know my customers. I’ll sometimes visit them between trips for a cup of tea and check on how they are.

“However, they all seem to think I am much older than 17, in fact one thought I was over 40.”

Weston College Principal, Dr Paul Phillips, OBE, said: “The focus of our College is about securing dynamic futures for our learners. Ian has demonstrated that he has both the determination and entrepreneurship to succeed in today’s business community. Each year we meet many people like Ian who realise their ambition and become an example for other students.”

Last opportunity at The Crescent

Crest Nicholsons Harbourside development in Bristol new Last opportunity at The Crescent

Crest Nicholson Harbourside development

Properties at Bristol’s premier waterside development have proved so popular there are now only six left to buy.

It means anyone wanting to move into one of the stunning apartments in The Crescent at Crest Nicholson’s Harbourside need to act now to avoid missing out.

The fact that 266 out of the 272 properties that were originally available in The Crescent have been sold is a clear demonstration of the development’s appeal.

It has taken shape over the years, so to has its popularity. With an enviable location, phenomenal views and high quality finish there is nothing comparable across the whole of the city.

For those with a preference for new, a predicted drop in the number of new build developments in the city by property agents Savills should also act to prompt buyers into action.

Savills also reports a return to positive house price growth with Bristol expected to lead house price recovery in the region which is anticipated to hit 21.5% between 2011 and 2015, so those who get in now will be at the forefront of the property sector recovery in the city.

Susan Young sales and marketing director for Harbourside said: “The combined effect of having only six properties left in The Crescent and fact that interest remains strong means anyone thinking of buying need to visit sooner rather than later.

“The development has attracted attention from the outset because of its superb location right in the heart of Bristol alongside the city’s historic floating harbour. With amenities on the doorstep and stunning views included, house hunters have been hard-pushed to find anything comparable in the region.

“The oversized nature of all the properties has also been a big draw. So those who think moving into an apartment could prove restrictive will be pleasantly surprised!”

“People buying now will benefit from moving in to a fully-formed community and the timing is perfect as they will be settled in and ready to decorate their new home for Christmas!

“This really is the last opportunity at The Crescent. Harbourside living is all about a lifestyle so it’s no surprise that the range of superb properties have been snapped up by discerning house hunters keen to own something completely unique in Bristol.”

There are numerous shops, restaurants and bars close by including Bordeaux Quay, Zen and Pizza Express. It is also a few minutes walk from Park Street and Queen Square and those wanting to get to Temple Meads can hop on the water ferry which has a designated stop outside the development.

Views across the floating harbour and out to the surrounding countryside are another fantastic selling point as well as the generously-sized apartments and high-quality finish meaning little maintenance.

Prices currently start from £249,950.

For further information please call the sales office on 0117 908 8888 or visit www.harbourside.co.uk. The marketing suite on Cathedral Walk is open daily from 10 am to 5pm.

Alex Lyttle of Wards Solicitors discusses the dangers of social media

alex lyttle1 Alex Lyttle of Wards Solicitors discusses the dangers of social media

Alext Lyttle of Wards Solicitors

Social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook can be greatly beneficial to your business. But there are also potential problems they can bring, such as an ill-thought out tweet or post going viral to more serious cases of social media causing harm to your company’s reputation, or ending the career of an employee.

Here is one such case. The Liverpool Employment Tribunal recently found the dismissal of a pub manager for inappropriate comments made on Facebook to be fair. Not only did the Tribunal consider her actions sufficiently proximate to her employment as to result in dismissal, but it also highlighted the importance of her employer’s company’s handbook relating to ‘e-mail, internet and intranet use’.

This is an example that highlights how acting innapropriately on social media sites can end in tears - both employees and employers can learn a lot from it.

The background

On May 24 2010, Miss Preece, a shift manager for JD Wetherspoons, and a colleague were subjected to what the Tribunal described as a “shocking torrent of verbal abuse and physical threats by a group of people, including customers known as Brian and Sandra”.

It was accepted that Miss Preece had dealt with the situation professionally at the time and that she had diffused the situation correctly by asking the customers to leave.

But shortly after the incident, and during work time, Miss Preece entered postings on her Facebook page disparaging the difficult customers. Several of her Facebook ‘friends’ respondent to her initial rant and a dialogue developed regarding the two customers- Brian and Sandra.

The Tribunal found that the comment could be viewed by at least 40 to 50 and possibly up to 646 people. On June 7 2010 Leslie Roache, the daughter of Brian and Sandra, complained to the company’ s customer service department about Miss Preece’s posts on Facebook.

Following an investigation, Miss Preece stated that she understood it was wrong to vent her anger on Facebook but that she thought her privacy settings meant only her work and school friends could see the entries.

At the disciplinary hearing, Miss Preece conceded that it was unacceptable to make inappropriate comments and that this might bring the company in to disrepute. Miss Preece was fired for gross misconduct. Miss Preece appealed against the decision but her appeal was not upheld on the grounds that the company had passed every stage of the test laid down, based around four key points.

  • Genuine belief
  • Reasonable grounds for belief
  • Reasonable and fair investigation
  • Range of reasonable responses

It seems that behaving in an inappropriate way in the sphere of social media can have as bad a consequence as doing so in the ‘real world’. Businesses and employees take note.

Visual Business can save firms money this winter

davern1 Visual Business can save firms money this winter According to a recent article published in the Daily Mail - Britain is set for an early winter, with snow expected to arrive as soon as next month.

Nicci Davies of Nailsea based Visual Business says that a consequence of bad weather for businesses is falling staff production and often refusal to even work due to severe conditions.

To tackle this problem and stop firms losing money, Visual Business has come up with a solution. The company, which is also one of the UK’s major suppliers of Rock Salt to airports, schools, colleges and businesses, has launched their 2011 winter survival kit, which Nicci believes will alleviate the problem:

“Last year the UK ran out of thermals which led to the most awful time.  I had customers whose staff refused to undertake some of their roles due to the cold, which caused mayhem and lost them money and future business.

“We’re going to experience the same weather this year – so it’s vital that businesses stock up to avoid being caught out again by snow and wet weather. Amongst the best sellers at the moment are thermal t-shirts, long johns, socks, gloves and padded jackets.

Adequate clothing is a key product to maintain good working relationships between employers and employees but the Winter Survival Kit, which buyers can customise to their needs, has a host of add-ons including:

  • Red Holdall
  • De-Icing Spray
  • Screen Wash
  • Warning Triangle
  • Hi Viz waistcoat
  • Thermal Gloves
  • 10 kg container of rock salt
  • Collapsible shovel
  • Ice scraper
  • Wind up torch

The kits have gone down a storm with business leaders keen to keep their staff productive, well equipped and safe throughout winter.

According to Nicci the product that is proving to be particular popular is the Visual Business padded fleece, which can accommodate a company logo. And for a limited time only you can have one for just £14.50 if you quote the following code – 2012 – when you contact Nicci.

Bootcamp Somerset success through hard work and initiative

Bootcamp Bootcamp Somerset success through hard work and initiativePrime Minister David Cameron has said he will champion “hard work”, “initiative” and “the courage to make your dream happen”: BBC article

In North Somerset alone there are many examples of people already making his vision a reality. One such example is Bootcamp Somerset. A personal training initiative launched by Weston born Matt Jupp after he took voluntary redundancy from his job on the Grand Pier, following the now world famous fire:

“I became fully qualified and set up my personal training business because becoming a personal trainer was something I’ve always wanted to do.

“It was a difficult decision to decide whether to either play it safe and get another 9-5 job or go into self-employment and take a risk, knowing that many businesses don’t break even in the first year.”

Matt went with his instincts and is now reaping the rewards. Despite only forming last year he has already trained over 100 clients that have included police officers, footballers and even dog agility trainers.

Flexible on time and competitively priced, it’s no wonder Bootcamp Somerset has been such a hit with people looking to get fit, and Matt is keen to stress that his approach is tailor made to each individual:

“I design the training so it’s exclusive and the groups are limited in size – up to ten people per session. This means my customers will always get the best possible service and quality personal training for a fraction of the cost elsewhere.

“As the groups are small, clients bond more, train harder and feel part of a team and not just a number.

“It’s not just about getting involved today. It’s about making a commitment to change your lifestyle and get more active,” Matt comments.

Amongst the many clients to get fit, healthy and have fun courtesy of Matt is Sam Cross, who works for North Somerset’s largest marketing agency ASG Marketing. He comments:

“For the amount of money you pay and the attention and expertise you get, Bootcamp Somerset is the best personal training option around. It’s really friendly and you really see the difference if you stick to it. Matt is also really flexible with times and makes you see the long term benefits of getting fit and supports you with nutrition as well.”

Bootcamp Somerset is also an official affiliate of the Go4life project, which is a North Somerset scheme encouraging and supporting people to get more healthy and active.

Top personal tax tips from Burton Sweet’s Rachel Finch

burton sweet logo Top personal tax tips from Burton Sweets Rachel FinchThere is one question that I am asked on an almost daily basis - “How do I pay no tax?”.  In my experience there are only 2 ways to achieve this, earn less than £7,475 per year or move to a tax haven.  Most people are reluctant to do the first and cannot afford to do the second!

Whilst as an Accountant I cannot magic away your tax liability, below are 5 top personal tax tips to reduce your liability and spread your tax burden:

Interest Free Loan From HMRC! – If you complete and submit your Tax Return before 31st December, and you are an employee or a pensioner then you may be able to have the amount you owe collected through the PAYE scheme.  This means that:

  • your underpayment is collected in 12 smaller chunks
  • you pay nothing until April 2012
  • you do not pay interest on the outstanding money.

So you effectively get a 12 month loan interest free from the government!

Think As A Family – We are all required to pay tax on our own individual earnings and assets. However,  if one spouse or civil partner pays tax at a lower rate than the other then moving income-producing assets, such as shares, investment funds, bank and building society accounts and jointly owned property, into the name of the partner who pays the lower rate of tax could save the family tax overall.

Avoid the 60% tax rate (no that isn’t a typing error!)- While references to the 60% tax rate will not be seen in any official literature, this is nevertheless the effective top rate of income tax rate for anyone with taxable income of more than £100,000. This is because you lose £1 of your personal allowance for every £2 that your income exceeds £100,000.  So you actually pay 60% on income between £100,001 and £114,950!

There are a number of options available to reduce or even avoid the 60% rate, such as deferring income from one accounting year to the next or making tax efficient investments such as pension contributions.

Childcare Vouchers – Parents of young children who pay for childcare normally have to do so out of their post tax income.  However, if your employer runs a Childcare Voucher scheme you may be able to receive up to £55 per week (per parent) in childcare vouchers.  The amount you can claim depends upon your income level.

A Basic Rate Tax payer needs to earn just over £80 per week to take home net pay of £55.  With the voucher the £55 is taken from your Gross salary, so you save both Tax and National Insurance and still receive £25 per week gross pay.

Review your PAYE Code – In recent months, there have been numerous errors generated from HMRC’s new computer system, which have led to people paying the wrong tax through their tax code. As a result people have been receiving demands for underpaid tax from several years ago.  These underpayments can often be avoided by ensuring that you have a correct PAYE code, ie making sure that any adjustment for a pension is correct, and if you have expenses paid by your employer that the figure used is reasonable. As well as ensuring that you are getting the right level of Personal allowance if you are over 65 or your income is over £100,000.

Even if you have not received a letter saying your tax has been over or underpaid, it is still worth checking your code as HMRC often use old or even incorrect data when generating the codes.

Somerset firm echo advice of TV money expert

JAD Solar copy2 288x300 Somerset firm echo advice of TV money expertA Somerset company has echoed the advice of a respected TV money expert who this week urged people to act now in buying solar panels for their homes and businesses.

Martin Lewis, a regular TV pundit helping save UK residents money, blogged this week for people to buy Solar PV panels before ‘feed-in’ tariffs change next April.

Alistair Davis of JAD Solar in Clevedon backed his comments.

On his blog on www.moneysavingexpert.co.uk Martin wrote: “Solar panels are popping up everywhere but we’ve heard strong industry rumours the rules may soon change, slashing the potential gain for newbies.

“This is the gob-smacking bit. The Government guarantees that for 25 years you’ll get a ‘feed-in tariff’, ie, be PAID to generate energy (even if you use it yourself) at over 3x what you pay to use it.”

He added: “If you’ve the cash, the feed-in tariff could repay double what you spend, eg, a £12,000 system could net £27,500 over 25 years.”

JAD Solar have seen interest from homeowners, businesses and even churches eager to save on rising energy costs. This week the firm took their giant JAD Solar bear mascot to meet families at Weston Super Mare’s My Fair Babynevent at Priory Community School.

Alistair said: “Martin as usual is spot on. Solar PV can not only save people energy costs but will also provide an amazing investment on their savings. We can give free consultations and surveys, and are keen to help local people save money and make money.”

JAD’s engineers have some 70 years of experience in Clevedon and also cover the Bristol area.

Thumbs the word for gym users

Club Manager Jason with member1 Thumbs the word for gym usersParched fitness enthusiasts in North Somerset are now just a thumb print away from quenching their thirsts.

That’s because the region’s leading health club has introduced a vending machine with a difference.

Introduced at theclub at DoubleTree by Hilton, Cadbury House, in Congresbury, it is the first health club in the South West to install the Aquarino drinks dispenser which is operated by merely scanning in a thumb print.

The new self-service machine, introduced from Germany, means for a flat fee of £1.99 a week members can drink as much as they like.

theclub has a reputation for always being among the first in the country to introduce innovative technology,” said manager Jason Eaton.

“The Aquarino self-service drinks station is no exception and is going to make a big change to the way members top up with liquids.

“With reportedly 80 per cent of gym-goers being poorly hydrated, the machine is going to make it a whole lot easier to stay refreshed.

“The machine is programmed to recognise thumb prints which means members can top up whenever they like.”

Described as ‘intelligent hydration’ the Aquarino IQ chrome drinks system is a light mineral beverage that contains added vitamins and comes in flavours including lemon, cherry, pineapple, raspberry and strawberry.

“Keeping hydrated when you’re working out is essential,” added Jason. “It means increased performance and reduced recovery time.

“Aquarino also has fewer calories than the main sports drinks and is said to be the most cost-effective mineral drink you can buy. It’s going to make a huge difference for our members and help them reach their goals far more effectively.”

Drink is dispensed in either 750 ml bottles or by the cup. The machine is programmed to allow the user to top up again after 30 minutes.

theclub, which is set within the grounds of the deluxe four-star DoubleTree by Hilton hotel, is a large air-conditioned gym fitted out with Technogym and Star Trac equipment.

Social media expert offering classes for Somerset businesses

Social Media image1 300x300 Social media expert offering classes for Somerset businessesA social media expert is offering training to Somerset business leaders on how to use Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIN to grow their companies.

Chris Wood of Q Social Media will host Social Media Masterclasses at the ClockTower at Rossholme, East Brent, Somerset, on Thursday October 27.

Chris said: “These social media masterclasses are ideal for Directors, Owners, Entrepreneurs and Sales and Marketing people wanting a full overview of how to use Facebook, Twitter and or LinkedIN as online marketing tools for business.

“The class will equip attendees with techniques and tricks to fully utilise the platforms to maximise online exposure on the web to their customer base. As well as equipping them with the knowledge to track whether it is working and how to be time-efficient when using these platforms.

“We appreciate some businesses may not want to use all three platforms, so you can pick ‘n’ choose which masterclasses you go to, whether it’s just one, two or all three.

“Each masterclass is up to two hours with time for questions to be answered too. The masterclasses include an electronic copy of the presentation(s) and refreshments. But lunch is only available for those attending the Facebook and Twitter masterclasses.”

Chris added: “There are still thousands of businesses who are still not sure of the strategic benefits offered by social media platforms and in many cases it is simply because people are unsure of what to do.

“Our social media masterclasses are designed to give people a basic understanding of what to do and what can be achieved in marketing a business online through these social media platforms - Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIN. We have found many people who have previously attended our training courses are able to step up their presence on these key social media platforms and get results.”
