Zen Banquet puts businesses in pole position for Chinese trade bonanzaBristol business people who want to establish closer links with counterparts in China can celebrate the Chinese New Year at a high powered reception next month.

Former Points West presenter Susan Osman will host the Bristol China Partnership evening at Zen Restaurant in Harbourside on Wednesday February 29.

Susan, who now works as a media consultant, has extensive experience of working in China hosting a prime-time radio breakfast show in Beijing and has first hand experience of working closely with leading Chinese industrialists.

Bristol Lord Mayor and President of the partnership Cllr Geoffrey Gollop has invited business people across the city to make the most of the outstanding networking opportunity.

“The event already has the backing of several major players including HSBC, UK Trade and Investment, the China-Britain Business Council and UWE and represents an excellent opportunity for Bristol businesses to expand trade and cultural connections with China.”

Zen Restaurant owner Suzanna Ho said they were delighted to be hosting the evening.

“We are looking forward to meeting old friends and new at the reception and hope business people will be encouraged to make some valuable contacts while enjoying excellent cuisine.”

Award-winning business launches another industry first

Insight Data Offices Award winning business launches another industry first Weston-super-Mare based Insight Data Ltd, the award winning supplier of business data and online software, has launched an innovative new online portal for the construction industry.

The Insight Index is a detailed product finder and business directory wrapped up in a fully-fledged search engine. It aims to help buyers and specifiers in the building products industry find new suppliers, source products and research information from both UK based companies and international suppliers who supply into the UK.

Helen Costeloe-Hughes, director at Insight Data, commented: “We have been researching and building databases for the UK window, door, conservatory, and building products industry since 2006, helping suppliers find new buyers for their products. The Insight Index is a reverse-engineering of this business model and helps buyers find new suppliers and products.”

The Insight Index has been developed over the last year and since its launch on 5th January over 300 suppliers are already listed, including well known suppliers such as Yale door locks and international companies such as the German based Technoform Glass Insulations. To raise awareness of the Insight Index the company has invested over £100,000 in a high profile marketing campaign promoting the Index across the entire construction industry using a cute character called ‘Dex’.

Insight Data Ltd is part of the Ascot Group owned by businessman Andrew Scott. The company has continued to buck the economic trend and grown from 4 staff in 2008 to 21 today, with plans to expand to 40 staff by 2015. It has twice picked up the Enterprise Agency Business of the Year Awards.

Bakery success story brings job boost

Parsons Bakery Bakery success story brings job boostMore jobs are being created at fast expanding Parsons Bakery after the South Liberty Lane based firm was awarded cash from the Regional Growth Fund.

The family run firm, which was based in Nailsea for many years, is about to celebrate its 110th anniversary – the last seven of them based at the SEGRO-operated South Liberty Lane estate where they have a 10,000 square foot bakery, shop and head office.

The fast expanding chain has just opened shops in Cheddar and Hungerford, with shop number 25 about to open in Chippenham.

Finance and Commercial Manager Nicola Elliott said the £30,000 additional funding would help support employment opportunities in South Bristol and North Somerset and could help create up to 16 full time and 16 part time jobs.

She said: “Parsons started out 110 years ago only a few miles from our current base and traditionally attracts staff from the local area. The additional money will help us bring in more people to support our expansion – not just locally but across the West where we hope to have 30 shops by the end of the year. Each additional shop requires between four and five new staff.

“As Parsons Bakery continues to grow and expand we are well placed geographically to service our newest shops in Somerset and Berkshire, and to expand further afield into the Cotswolds as well as over the bridge into Wales and along the M4 corridor towards London. “

The evening will begin at 7.30pm and tickets are £18 per person. The Wine Tasting Company’s founder Kelli Gould explains what will be available on the night.

“We’ll also be exploring wines from Spain and Portugal and you will get the chance to try some classics you know and some that are a little different.”

The Wine Tasting Company was set up by Kelli following a 2006 trip to New Zealand where she discovered a love for wine. Returning to the UK Kelli entered the wine trade, first in London and then in Bristol for an independent merchant and has since gained advanced qualifications with the Wine Spirit and Education Trust. Knightstone housing completes first stock swap

Nick Horne Knightstone housing completes first stock swap

Nick Horne

Two of the South West’s major housing providers have completed the swap of over 1,400 homes in Somerset and Wiltshire – one of the largest ever stock swaps in the social housing sector.

In an effort to deliver a more efficient local service to residents, the move has resulted in Knightstone Housing Association taking ownership and management of 677 homes in Somerset with Sovereign Housing Association taking ownership of 758 homes in Swindon and Wiltshire where it already has a significant number of homes and a very active development programme.

Confirmation of the stock swap follows a detailed six-week consultation with the residents affected by the transfer.

For Knightstone Housing this move is an important part of its ‘Take on the Future’ transformation plan which includes concentrating its services across nine local authorities.

Residents whose homes have been transferred will now benefit from closer local management.

Nick Horne, chief executive of Knightstone Housing said: “These home swaps are part of a package of bold changes that will transform what we do, how we do it and where we do it.

“We’re very pleased to have completed this first stock swap with Sovereign with both negotiations and the transfer having gone smoothly. Knightstone and Sovereign share a passion for providing excellent customer service and we have assured residents in both areas that this will continue.

“Part of our plan is to invest more in supporting neighbourhoods so they are places people continue to want to live and this first stock swap will help us achieve just that.”

Prior to this first stock swap, Knightstone Housing Association owned and managed 11,000 homes across 37 local authorities. Within three years the association expects to be managing over 10,000 homes in the nine West of England and Somerset local authority areas.

Heather Bowman, Sovereign’s Housing and Communities Director said: “Having consulted residents in Wiltshire and Somerset, we are very pleased that they have understood the rationale for this move. They have welcomed the fact that it will result in a more responsive and cost-effective local service for customers.

“This is one of the largest ever stock swaps in our sector, and it makes sense in the current economic climate. It allows both businesses to consolidate in areas where they already have a significant presence and deliver efficiencies, which will enable us to re-invest in services and provide more high-quality affordable homes.”

Knightstone is also putting in place plans to build on its position as a major developer of new affordable homes for rent and sale and aims to develop 1500 new homes in Somerset and the West of England in the next five years.

Part of the associations restructuring plans also includes the building of a new centralised head office in Weston-super-Mare to replace its six existing offices.

Nick added: “By responding proactively to customer priorities, government changes to housing policy, rents, tenures and welfare benefits and the current economic climate, we’re making sure we’re doing the right thing for our business, residents, staff and partners in the years ahead.”

Weston based Vet raises awareness of new travel rules

Labrador Suitcase Weston based Vet raises awareness of new travel rulesIt is now cheaper and easier to take your dog or cat on holiday abroad thanks to UK law being brought into line with the rest of Europe. The process for obtaining a Pet Passport has been streamlined and can now be completed in less than a month, and for considerably less cost than under the previous rules.

Head Nurse at Companion Care Vets in Weston-super-Mare, Lisa Owen comments: “The recent law changes have cut out much of the cost and most of the time delay. You can now get a full passport within a month of deciding you wish to travel and it will cost you about £100 less than before!”

“Our pets are a hugely important part of our family lives, so every year hundreds of us face the tough decision about what to do with them at holiday time.?”

More information about the new travel rules can be found on DEFRA’s website, Practice Director Robert White-Adams concludes: “We still advise talking to your Vet about your travel plans – the pet passport allows you to travel quite freely but you still need to visit a vet abroad for a parasite treatment before your return to the UK, and you should also check with your vet what protection your pet needs to keep them fit and healthy whilst you are on holiday.”

To raise awareness of the new travel rules, Companion Care Vets in Weston-super-Mare are offering a promotional discount on pet passports: Usually costing in excess of £100, we are now offering the rabies vaccination, passport documents and micro-chipping (if not already done) for under half price, just £50, offering another huge saving on top of the already cheaper new travel requirements.

Suffering for their art?

Digerarti and Glitterarti launch1 Suffering for their art?A strong wind and cold rain didn’t put a damper on the launch of a new art exhibition and digital hub in Weston-super-Mare this week.

Almost twenty artists from Somerset and Bristol braved the elements on the Grand Pier on Tuesday 24th January, to unfurl a 14m long banner featuring some of their work that is being exhibited from this month in The Gallery @ within the Digital Photo Studio.

“Although the weather conspired against us when we were taking our launch photos, we were delighted to welcome people to the warmth of The Gallery @ afterwards,” said Kevin Thompson, Director of the Digital Photo Studio.

“They say people suffer for their art and standing in the rain and wind certainly brought home the meaning of the phrase. However, we were pleased that the new art exhibition and community digital hub has been so well supported by the artistic communities of Somerset and Bristol.

We will be running a new exhibition each month and already have a waiting list of people to include their work. We have included a mix of first time exhibitors from local towns including Weston, Portishead and Burnham-on-Sea as well as established artists such as Huw Richards Evans who is so well known for his amazing land and seascapes.”

The artists involved have been dubbed the Digerarti and Glitterarti to reflect their respective artistic talents.

Those of the Digerati include photographers and videographers, graphic web designers and those who write and design apps for smart phones and tablets. The Glitterati includes sculptors, creators of collage, tattoo and street artists as well as more traditional painters.

The Gallery @ is located within the Digital Photo Studio 3 Locking Road, Weston-super-Mare BS23 3BY and is open 11am to 4pm daily. Entry is free.

A 90-second film of the launch event is available to view in 3D or 2D online: Video was filmed and edited by Digerarti member, Neil Richards of The Digital Film Company (to switch between watching in 2D or 3D, simply click the red 3D icon on the bottom right of the YouTube toolbar).
