Bus operator attracts enthusiasts

Bakers Dolphin Bus operator attracts enthusiastsA group of 80 bus enthusiasts from across the country have paid a special visit to the North Somerset bus operator Bakers Dolphin for the first time in 24 years.

The PSV Circle visited the Weston-super-Mare-based operators as part of a tour of the South West and viewed the fleet of 77 buses and coaches the firm has to offer.

One of the main attractions was the new 66 Hopper bus which was launched by Bakers Dolphin at the beginning of the month to service a new route across North Somerset.

Bakers Dolphin Operations Manager Chris Rubery said: “It was great to meet the group from the PSV Circle and welcome them back after so many years.

“We presented every visitor with an up-to-date fleet list and answered the many questions the group had about our services.”

Established in 1889 Bakers Dolphin provides coach holidays and public service routes across the South West.

New community partnership

Priory School logo 300x210 New community partnershipA new partnership between Priory Community School – an Academy Trust – and a thriving new health centre is being launched.

Around 12 Priory Community School students will design a confidential health questionnaire for all 1,200 students in partnership with the new St Georges Health Centre based across the road in Pastures Avenue.

The aim of the on-going partnership is to see an improvement in health and health awareness issues of students and even their parents.

St Georges Health Centre is now fully open and taking new patients in Pastures Avenue opposite PCSA behind the Magistrates’ Court. This new project is an attempt to partner to improve health in the community.

Practice Manager Steve Edwards said the partnership will involve youngsters visiting the health centre to chat to doctors and experts.

He said: “We are trying to do health awareness and work in new ways which is far more pro-active on healthcare than attempting to solve problems when they arise.
“We are keen to change the health lifestyles of the community.”

Students involved in the partnership will also often be exploring future careers in healthcare as doctors, nurses or in other related avenues.

PCSA’s ‘Student Voice’ co-ordinator Julie Finlayson said: “Priory students are remarkably innovative and love the whole idea of investigating data and coming up with solutions.”

Clevedon-based company bucks the trend.

Wall a Tac 3 Clevedon based company bucks the trend.

Example Wall-a-Tac

As the UK officially slips back into recession, Clevedon-based Mark A Humphries Print Graphics Mailing is bucking the trend and expanding its offering.

The print, mailing and graphics expert has just signed an exclusive agency agreement to supply an innovative new product, Wall-a-tac, to the Bristol, Bath and Somerset area.

Wall-a-tac is custom wallpaper and provides the ultimate in personalisation. It can be applied to almost any surface and, when no longer needed, can simply be peeled off, leaving no residue or damage to the surface.

It can be used in a variety of ways, both within a business setting and in the home.

Mark Humphries, owner of Mark A Humphries Print Graphics Mailing, said: “I’m always on the lookout for exciting new products, but nothing could have prepared me for the way Wall-a-tac has taken off. The market has been crying out for a product with this level of flexibility and it complements perfectly the other print and mailing services I am known for.”

Mark, who spent 20 years working for international market leading companies before successfully launching his business last July, has already found Wall-a-tac is proving popular with his customers.

One customer who has used the product, Jim Hardcastle from Viper Marketing ltd in North Somerset said “Wall-a-tac was the perfect solution for our problem. We do lots of training and facilitation in rooms without projector screens. A large piece of white Wall-a-tac with our logo on makes a perfect screen that sticks to loads of different surfaces. Clients are always impressed when we peel it on then off again later for next time!”

Tax deadline looms for some North Somerset businesses

Robert Stone 17 low res Tax deadline looms for some North Somerset businesses

Benjamin Franklin famously said that in this world there is nothing that is certain except death and taxes. For some traders in North Somerset the latter is once again demonstrating its certainty, as Somerset Based tax-expert and Chartered Accountant Robert Stone explains.

Electricians tax

HMRC is currently sending out letters to electricians, urging them to pay any undisclosed taxes through the Electricians Tax Safe Plan (ETSP). With electricians only having until May 15 to register with the scheme and August 14 to disclose any tax owed and arrange payment.

Tax deadlines are also looming in other sectors as well, but there is a caveat. Just because an electrician receives one of these letters from HMRC, it doesn’t necessarily mean they owe tax.

Conversely, if an electrician doesn’t receive a letter, they must not assume that HMRC isn’t watching them.

Ebay traders

It’s a different story for Ebay traders though, their deadline of March 31 has already expired and the Taxman has promised to come down hard on anyone who has not come forward.

In fact HMRC will be hitting tax evaders hard with penalties of up to 100% of the tax lost – in serious cases it may be up to 200%.

Anyone receiving an income from internet trading, in other words buying and selling goods commercially on E-marketplaces such as eBay, will be liable to pay income tax on these earnings, warns the Taxman, who will be analysing the information it receives, to see which taxpayers are failing to declare their earnings.

Furthermore, local Somerset traders need to be aware that if they are doing more than selling the occasional personal item they may have to inform HMRC and pay Income Tax on any profits they make.

Sophisticated technology

In its latest effort to track down missing tax returns, HM Revenue & Customs will be using new sophisticated technology to focus on these two groups – who it suspects are not declaring all the income they should.

The Taxman has revealed that it is acquiring information from a wide range of sources, such as online advertising, industry bodies, trade directories and tax records.

Anyone unsure as to whether they qualify as an internet business trader should look at HMRC’s guidance section on E-marketplace trading at www.hmrc.gov.uk/guidance/selling/examples.htm.

Make More Margin’s retail business column

Ken Make More Margins retail business column

Make More Margin’s Ken Simpson

In the first entry of his exclusive column for the Weston and North Somerset Echo, retail expert Ken Simpson of Make More Margin highlights how retailers can capitalise on major upcoming events, such as the Queen’s Jubilee, to boost business.

A diamond jubilee for retailers?

June will host some important events that look set to capture the mood of the nation, and will provide retailers with an opportunity to boost sales.

First up we have the extended bank holiday weekend for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The majority of the nation will be celebrating this landmark anniversary in some way and your retail business can capitalise on the general public’s willingness to splash out on this landmark celebration.

There is likely to be street parties across North Somerset to mark the event, providing a profitable opportunity to supply a wide-range of food and drink. It’s important then, that you are well-stocked for the event and can meet the likely demand. Do not underestimate how much you can sell either, especially the longer life products and frozen foods, which if not consumed on the day will still have a shelf-life.

Football’s not coming home….

Football may not be coming home this year but Euro 2012 does follow hot on the heels of the Diamond Jubilee. Whilst not everyone is a football fan, an event like the European football championship never fails to capture the nation’s imagination, giving your retail business another huge opportunity to cash in.

The tournament kicks off on June 8 with hosts Poland (big opportunity here with Polish food and beer) playing Greece. The Republic of Ireland take on Croatia in their opener on June 10, which is a great opportunity to sell some Guinness and other Irish products, possibly leading with an offer.

Convenient opportunity

The tournament is also a great opportunity for convenience stores, off licenses and sports shops to promote themed products and make up their own Euro special multi-buys. For example, this could include eight-cans of beer with a Pizza and Crisps offer. Make sure you’re able to cater for barbecues as well, by stocking charcoal, disposable BBQs and ice bread rolls.

Rising temperatures

As well as playing host to these significant retail opportunities, May and June is also the time of year when temperatures start to climb. Retailers with refrigerated units should take this opportunity to ensure that their air intake grills are cleaned.

This is vital in order to allow the unit to work at its optimum level, which will reduce energy consumption and heat output, ensuring that any profit made of the back of these events is not swallowed up by fuel bills.

It is a simple task that can be executed with a soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Also, check that your air conditioning units are working well in advance of the summer sun, so it doesn’t become a last-minute issue.

It’s shaping up to be another tough year for the high-street. But high-profile events such as the Diamond Jubilee, Euro 2012 and The Olympics provide huge opportunities, which if planned and accommodated for can help your business boost sales and make more margin.
