The end of the term is rapidly approaching and I spent a few minutes looking at the various demands and dictates arriving on my desk. They range from details of how short notice Ofsted inspections will operate to funding changes and the new adult loans scheme.

On top of that and let’s just say we push all of this to one side, there is the bread and butter – actually ensuring that the learners in front of us are taught properly by inspirational teachers who will give them the skills to progress to further study and eventually employment.

Ofsted agenda

The Ofsted agenda is an interesting one because the first thing the inspectorate needs to do is to examine the mix of provision between long, short and very short categories. One might inevitably expect the ratio to vary slightly between inspections, but if it has changed dramatically then it is time to dig around to see if curriculum is being manipulated for inspector rather than curriculum being for the purpose for the learner.

It is also worth looking at Colleges that reduce in size considerably because that in itself may signify inappropriate strategy. Generally allowing for such analysis there is an almost straight forward focus on the learner journey of experience complete with associated success.

We shouldn’t moan about that, it is the purpose of our roles today. Every college is different but we all need to focus upon producing the best possible learning experience for everyone who crosses our doorstep.

Staff within colleges generally deliver way above the statutory requirements of their role. I am writing this article at 6.30pm on a Wednesday evening in my college, yet most of the secretarial staff are still present, as are many lecturers completing moderation of coursework, providing individual support to students’ etc. etc.

Market forces

I was amazed therefore to read in an article from another source that our staff in Further Education (FE) colleges are overpaid with generous perks and holidays – my experience of FE staff, and I have worked in five different FE Colleges in my career, is that staff are dedicated, conscientious, entrepreneurial and highly professional.

That isn’t to say that there are a few who play the clock waiting game with minimal interaction, but market forces dictate and they won’t be with us for long.

Adult loans

I am not going to spend any time this month on funding changes because it is inevitable that they will occur and even more inevitable that they will continue to re-occur.

The use of the adult loans however is a concern – I can accept to a certain extent that people must pay for training, but since the loans in the main will not be huge in comparison to Higher Education loans, how will the process be managed?

In my own college we have been highly successful in engaging hard to reach learners and getting them over the threshold where the majority then vastly increase their confidence and succeed.

Now however, we have the double whammy do all that and get them to sign up for the loan. Ok we’ve got to do it but is the loan application quick or are the forms a bureaucratic nightmare? I don’t know the answer but it will be a novel process dealing with adults who need key support in foundation learning and who may have to fill in a loan application synonymous with a detailed mortgage application!

My understanding from the Skills Funding Agency is that we will be able to suggest positive suggestions for possible change. If that’s the case make sure you pilot the ability for these forms to be filled in correctly in the first place.

Poachers turned gamekeepers

Finally, it is that time of year when we say goodbye to some colleagues who have decided to escape the rat race, have got their retirement sorted and have just managed to beat the latest austerity measures from the Government regarding pensions and annual allowance and lifetime allowance etc.

Good luck to you all, certainly some key leaders are leaving the patch in the South West where I work, brilliant because they have inspiration, and successful because they are poachers turned gamekeepers. The world of Further Education continues to be a magnet for the entrepreneur, the commercial manager and those who seek knowledge.

So I will close now but not before wishing all of you a successful start to the next academic year, but preferably a well-deserved break at some point in the next few weeks. Look after your new entrants to the teaching profession in September in particular because to date they are untainted by bureaucracy, idiosyncrasies and plain daft decisions.

New academy for North Somerset

For those readers in North Somerset we are witnessing significant change for both the town of Weston-super-Mare and the whole authority area. Plans are coming to fruition from a number of perspectives and these include a new Academy for learners with Autism and Asperger’s, significant success at the end of year shows for both Weston College and local schools, plus continued changes with regard to NHS re-organisation and the new developments on the seafront of Weston-super-Mare.

I watched a programme on the economy of Greece last night and against this benchmark, the area is pretty outstanding!

Event to mark new apprenticeship scheme

Weston College logo Event to mark new apprenticeship schemeAn event to launch Weston College’s new Higher Apprenticeship Scheme, the first in the South West, will be held on Wednesday, July 11.

Higher Apprenticeships will enable employees to gain university level qualifications while working.

Employers interested in finding out more are welcome to the launch event at Doubletree by Hilton, Cadbury House in Congresbury from 6pm.

Qualifications will include Foundation Degrees, HNCs or HNDs, NVQ Levels 4 and 5 and other Professional qualifications in areas including accountancy, construction and engineering.

College Principal and Chief Executive, Dr Paul Phillips OBE, said: “This event will provide an opportunity for employers to find out about Higher Apprenticeships.

“Weston College as part of a consortium of colleges, is at the forefront of Higher Level apprenticeship and we are very excited about what the future holds for employers who want highly qualified staff and employees who can gain a degree level qualification and earn while they learn.”

Yeo Valley, the Somerset-based family-run dairy company, hosted an expert garden workshop with Bunny Guinness on Friday 22nd June, to help fund a pioneering rehabilitation garden for spinal cord injury patients.

The talk entitled ‘Transforming your Garden with Bunny Guinness’ took place at Yeo Valley’s Organic Garden and Tea Room in Blagdon. Keen gardeners and budding enthusiasts

attended to learn handy tips from the TV and radio personality – who regularly exhibits at the Chelsea Flower Show – such as the use of plants, colour, surface materials and buildings to dictate the mood of a garden.

Attendees also enjoyed a delicious two-course lunch using locally sourced produce, as well as a guided tour of Yeo Valley’s Organic Garden – one of only a handful in the UK.

Friday’s talk was the latest installment in a series of exclusive events, including an upcoming garden expert talk by Jekka McVicar on 13th July entitled ‘Herbs: More Than Just A Garnish’, and a handful of farm tours and garden tours throughout the summer, commencing Friday July 6.

Money raised from the Yeo Valley garden workshops will go towards the Southern Spinal Injuries Trust and Horatio’s Garden, the planned rehabilitation garden at the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre in Salisbury, which is the only specialist spinal injury centre in the South and South West.

The garden is named in memory of Horatio Chapple, a student who was killed in a polar bear attack in Norway last August. Horatio was a volunteer at the Spinal Treatment Centre and had helped with research that identified patients’ needs for a garden.

The first phase of development plans which will ultimately enable Bristol Airport to handle 10 million passengers a year was officially opened by the Secretary of State for Transport recently.

The Rt Hon Justine Greening MP cut a ribbon to mark the completion of three new aircraft stands – the first of more than 30 separate projects which will enable growth over the next decade.

Each stand has a fixed electrical ground power source, and strict rules govern the use of aircraft auxiliary power units and mobile diesel units in order to reduce noise levels for local residents. The new stands are key to increasing capacity for more aircraft to operate from Bristol, which is currently the fifth largest airport outside London.

Developments will include the extension of the terminal building to almost double its size; a new public transport interchange; further aircraft parking stands; and an on-site hotel. A comprehensive package of controls, monitoring and mitigation is in place, including substantial contributions to two major transport schemes in the West of England (the South Bristol Link and Bus Rapid Transit) to improve surface access to the Airport.

Transport Secretary, Justine Greening, said:“Regional airports such as Bristol have a vital role to play in the life and success of our country, providing the connections, jobs and infrastructure we need to drive economic growth.

“The work I have seen at Bristol will stand the airport in good stead to serve the needs of regional passengers and businesses for many years to come. I welcome the investment that has gone into these improvements and look forward to seeing Bristol play a full part in the future of UK aviation.“

Robert Sinclair, Chief Executive Officer at Bristol Airport, said:“This is the start of an exciting journey for Bristol Airport, and I am delighted that the Secretary of State for Transport, Justine Greening, will be joining us to mark the occasion.

“The Government recognises the value of regional airports, and I am sure the Secretary of State will enjoy seeing first hand how Bristol Airport can contribute to a sustainable future for UK aviation.”

Improvements to existing facilities are also underway, with an additional immigration facility opening this summer and an expanded security search area already in place to increase the efficiency of these essential processes and reduce queues at peak times.

Alliance Homes honoured at the ‘Business Oscars’

Alliance Homes won Construction Employer of the Year at the College’s recent Excellence in Business Training Awards 2012 event, which honoured businesses and apprentices.

Alliance Homes Business Enterprise Manager, Michael Williams, said: “We are a business that is about helping communities and it is essential to support young people in them.”

One of their apprentices, Abigail Nicholas, 22, of Exford Close on the Coronation Estate in Weston, was Highly Commended in the Voluntary Sector Learner of the Year Award.

She said: “I’ve been an apprentice for nearly a year and absolutely love the team I work with and Weston College has been there to give me support.”

Weston College Principal and Chief Executive, Dr Paul Phillips OBE added: “Alliance Homes is an extremely supportive employer which works in partnership with the College.”

Dr Phillips shared the celebrations with more than 220 employers and learners at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel near Yatton.

Four McDonald’s staff from Weston Super Mare have been selected, from over 87,000 across the country, to work at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The four specially selected crew members are amongst a 2,000 strong squad of McDonald’s staff that have been chosen following a rigorous test of their speed, customer service and ability to work as part of a team – all essential skills to deliver the ultimate customer experience during London 2012.

Brad Mousley, 18, from Weston super Mare explains how he feels about being chosen to be part of the McDonald’s Olympic Champion Crew: “I feel so lucky to have been selected out of so many people. Being given the chance to work at the Games will be the biggest recognition of my hard work yet and it’s a great feeling knowing how proud my family is of my achievement.

Anna Siuda, 23, from Weston super Mare has also been selected and comments: “I think the most challenging thing will be keeping up with the volume of customers, but I am really excited to be working in the busiest McDonald’s restaurants in the country and meeting lots of new people.”

Local McDonald’s franchisee, Tim Lamb, comments: “I’m delighted that so many staff from across Weston Super Mare have been chosen to take part in this fantastic opportunity. McDonald’s was looking for its very best people. ”

The crew will travel to London this summer to work across the four temporary McDonald’s restaurants in and around the Olympic park. They will play a key role in serving an estimated 1.75 million meals in 29 days to 9.7 million spectators, a workforce of 200,000 and 17,000 athletes and team officials quickly and safely. Staff will work for between 7-10 days at their nominated restaurant.

Asda Distribution Centre at Portbury, recently teamed up with Body Management Clevedon to mark the Queen’s jubilee and raise money for the Everyman Charity.

Shaun Partridge, Asda’s Community Life Champion sold raffle tickets to colleagues at the depot, with the winner of the raffle receiving a full day’s pampering kindly donated by Jonathan Hughes, the General Manager of the Clevedon based club.

Shaun comments: “We wanted to do something different for the jubilee, and at the same time raise some money for charity, and Body Management were extremely generous with the donation of this prize.

“We are also pleased to be linking up with a local business, as part of the initiative to make Asda a bigger part of the local community, and also to use their expertise to help promote all the benefits of a healthy lifestyle to our colleagues. As the club is open to anyone to use, we hope that our colleagues who live locally will take advantage of what they have to offer.”

The lucky ticket, drawn by Jonathan, was held by Asda receptionist Kay Norman, who couldn’t believe the good news when she was told that she was going to be treated like a Queen for the day.

Jonathan said that “Kay will be able to use all the facilities at the club, from the Zen Garden, the Sauna and Steam Room, through to the gym equipment if she wants to, as well as receiving a treatment of her choice from one of our beauticians, and enjoying a meal in our Health Café at the end of her special day.”

When trying to book a holiday online, one North Somerset couple got so frustrated at not being able to see what was really on offer that they decided to do something about it.

Fast-growing telecoms provider Pure Comms has appointed a new member of staff.

Colin Pearson, 62, who lives in Portishead, joins the firm as Financial Controller and will be responsible for book keeping, payroll, accounts and a host of other financial duties.

Colin is a qualified and experienced chartered accountant, having worked as an AIMS accountant since 1996, working closely with many businesses across the region.

He comments: “I really am delighted to have been appointed to this role. Pure Comms is an ambitious business that has huge potential.

“It’s great to see a young business getting off the ground and it’s clear that all the ingredients for success are in place here.

“I’m something of an elder statesman compared to the rest of the team and it’s exciting to be part of something that has such a bright future.”

Before becoming an AIMS accountant Colin was a former business owner himself, having run his own mail order company which distributed desktop equipment.

Rob Vivian, Managing Director of Pure Comms, comments: “Colin’s appointment is something of a coup. He will give us a really strong combination of accounting and finance experience and real business nous. We’re already benefiting from this steadying hand and sage advice.”

We are relentlessly optimistic at Priory and I hope Roy Hodgson and England will adopt the same approach at Euro 2012.

I am not totally convinced that England can carry off the Euro 2012 trophy this month – but you lose nothing by being positive and optimistic.

As students across North Somerset leave school for good this month, I am certain that we are going to continually hear fantastic things about our current crop of Priory Year 11s in the years to come.

Schools are amazing breeding grounds of inspirational stories of hope. Today’s school leaver is tomorrow’s success in the world. I’m regularly hearing great things about ex-PCSA students.

Take Dan Borrett for example, who was part of our sporting teams at Priory a few years ago where he learned valuable leadership skills.

Now he has just secured a new trainee manager role aged only 22 at Sainsbury’s in Worle. He has ambitions to run a big store himself. Tremendous news for Dan – not everyone needs to go to University be make a mark in the world although many of our ex-students do progress through that route.

Dan was telling us that supermarket store managers have become executive roles managing 7 figure budgets.

Another one of our old boys, Jake Caulfield, joined professional Bristol Rugby post leaving PCSA after playing for London Irish. He has just travelled on an 18-hour flight to spend four months in Wellington, New Zealand.

What an opportunity at 18! Dan Tuohy, also ex-Priory, recently scored at Twickenham for Ulster and plays internationally for Ireland.

In the theatre world Michelle Brown (Michelle Terry on stage) is another ex-Priory student who continues to win plaudits at the National Theatre and we hope will be making another series for Sky TV of ‘The Cafe’. Michelle co-wrote ‘The Cafe’.

Then there is 17-year-old Jake Fisher who has recently won a scholarship to one of the leading Performing Arts colleges in the world – and one which is supported by Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber.

We also have Ginette Warr back with us doing teacher training. Aged only 30 she already has a PhD in Palaeoanthropology. The title of her 100,000 word dissertation itself is incredible – ‘the Chronology of the western Limeworks australopithecine site, Makapansgat, South Africa: Magnetostratigraphy, biochronology and implications for hominin evolution’.

And there are literally hundreds and hundreds more across success stories we could write about. We tell our students to dream big and achieve.
