Community project for improved health

New health centre Community project for improved health

St Georges Health Centre

GCSE students are planning a project with a new state-of-the-art health centre to monitor and improve the health of their peers, parents and community.

Psychology students at Priory Community School – an Academy Trust – will come up with an anonymous questionnaire for the 1200 students in partnership with St Georges Health Centre based across the road in Pastures Avenue.

Questions will include diet, amount of daily physical exercise taken and time spent on computer games.

Statistics generated will then be analysed by Maths students and published to make people aware of the consequences of bad health habits.

For example, the statistics could predict what percentage of students could develop diabetes if they don’t change their eating and exercise habits.

The project is part of a plan by the health centre to improve the health of the community – rather than wait for costly medical treatment in the future.

Practice Manager Steve Edwards said: “We don’t believe in waiting until people fall ill before taking action on health. Our health centre wants to help improve the health of students, their parents and the wider community, and to start early.

“Our NHS will not be able to afford large levels of funding for healthcare in the future, so we are trying now to change health habits in new ways.

“It is a fact that children are able to positively influence their parents’ health by becoming more aware of healthy eating and lifestyle, and we are confident this study will have a good effect.”

The partnership will also involve youngsters visiting the health centre to chat to doctors and experts.

PCSA’s ‘Student Voice’ co-ordinator Julie Finlayson said: “Priory students are remarkably innovative and love the whole idea of investigating data and coming up with solutions to improve things. Health is a vital area for quality of life.”

John Penrose MP 300x225 John Penrose MP joins families in official openingDozens of people, including John Penrose MP, attended the official launch of the new state-of-the-art St Georges’ Health Centre in Weston.

John Penrose MP joined families in the celebration of its official opening on Saturday.

Visitors enjoyed a bouncy castle, face-painting, balloons, competitions, health information and advice stands at the base in Pastures Avenue behind the Magistrates’ Court.

People also signed up to become patients at the health centre which now has around 1800 patients.

They also took up the offer of free quick health checks, smoking cessation and alcohol consumption advice.

The health centre aims to manage local health care in a new way by helping patients and the community to partner and improve health together – rather than wait for people to fall ill.

Practice Manager Steve Edwards said: “It was a tremendous event to mark the official opening. We are trying to manage health in a new way and want to partner with people and organisations in the community, such as schools, to help improve healthcare for generations to come.”

St Georges Health Centre’s Practice Manager discusses health and community related issues for this regular Weston & North Somerset Echo column.

As we head quickly towards summer, are you thinking of following a healthier lifestyle? It’s a simple fact that living a healthy lifestyle is far better than having to face regular trips to the doctor.

That’s why St Georges Health Centre was set up.

We intend to partner with people of all ages across the area to try to help their health for the decades to come. A healthy lifestyle can involve regular exercise, and a balanced diet – which includes cutting the amount of sugar, salt and fat we eat.

Here’s a few other simple pointers to start you off.

Eat lots of fruit and vegetables.
Eat more fish.
Cut down on saturated fat and sugar.
Eat less salt – no more than 6 g a day.
Be active and maintain a healthy weight.
Drink plenty of water.
Don’t skip breakfast.

If you’re thinking of starting a new healthier lifestyle, why not start with a visitor to your doctor.

Just recently we referred patients on to Hutton Moor Leisure Centre for a six-week, 12-session health improvement course under an exercise referral scheme.

The state-of-the-art St Georges Health Centre was opened to the public at the end of last year. To register at the health centre call 01934 527681 or pop in to their base in Pastures Avenue behind the magistrates’ court in North Worle.

New community partnership

Priory School logo 300x210 New community partnershipA new partnership between Priory Community School – an Academy Trust – and a thriving new health centre is being launched.

Around 12 Priory Community School students will design a confidential health questionnaire for all 1,200 students in partnership with the new St Georges Health Centre based across the road in Pastures Avenue.

The aim of the on-going partnership is to see an improvement in health and health awareness issues of students and even their parents.

St Georges Health Centre is now fully open and taking new patients in Pastures Avenue opposite PCSA behind the Magistrates’ Court. This new project is an attempt to partner to improve health in the community.

Practice Manager Steve Edwards said the partnership will involve youngsters visiting the health centre to chat to doctors and experts.

He said: “We are trying to do health awareness and work in new ways which is far more pro-active on healthcare than attempting to solve problems when they arise.
“We are keen to change the health lifestyles of the community.”

Students involved in the partnership will also often be exploring future careers in healthcare as doctors, nurses or in other related avenues.

PCSA’s ‘Student Voice’ co-ordinator Julie Finlayson said: “Priory students are remarkably innovative and love the whole idea of investigating data and coming up with solutions.”

Inductions start on 2nd April and the scheme will begin on Monday 16th April at the leisure centre with gym and health workouts tailored to each person and their needs.

Medical conditions accepted onto the scheme include hypertension, obesity, back pain, MS, Parkinsons Disease, diabetes, mental health, rheumatoid arthritis, stroke and osteoporosis.

Steve Edwards of St Georges Health Centre said: “This is a new scheme where we are trying to improve the health of local people.

“The aim of the sessions is to encourage people with a medical condition to become more physically active.

New health centre making connections

New health centre1 New health centre making connectionsA new family friendly health centre is busy making connections with children and families across fast-growing estates in Weston and Worle.

The newly opened St Georges Health Centre, just behind the Magistrates’ Court in North Worle, is looking to partner with dozens of children’s centres, nurseries, pre-schools and schools in the area.

The state-of-the-art Health Centre opened this month to help the area cope with a soaring local population and to provide family-friendly facilities for thousands of new families.

Now the centre is looking to partner with all local schools and places where children and families attend to carry out fun activities to make children and parents aware of health eating and lifestyles.

Schools and centres they are in discussion with at the moment include Priory Community School – an Academy Trust, St Georges’ Primary School and Castlebatch Community Centre.

Practice Manager Steve Edwards said: “We are trying to do things in new ways at the health centre. We cater for all ages but we are very family friendly and we want to form connections with all local centres that serve children and families.

“If anyone runs family services in the area I would encourage them to get in touch.”

The new health centre is proving very popular because of its 21st century style and extended opening times.

The centre is open to 6.30pm on Mondays and Fridays, and to 7.30pm on Tuesday and Wednesdays, and from 9am till 12noon on Saturdays.

The new Health Centre has been commissioned by NHS North Somerset and the surgery will be run by Malling Health limited, in response to one of the fastest growing populations in Europe.

Demand from patients for surgery facilities has seen some local surgeries busting at the seams and this new surgery has been designed to accommodate between six and ten thousand patients.

Practice Manager Steve Edwards said: “This is an exciting time for thousands of residents and families. The facilities are cutting-edge, modern, technological and bright, and our staff are very well trained, friendly, and helpful.

“The surgery aim to will provide modern facilities, longer opening hours including Saturdays and same day consultations.

“We also plan innovative, unique ways of working and partnering with the community which we will be unveiling in future weeks.”

Resident Adam Maxwell who moved into The Grange, West Wick this week and was one of the first to register at the health centre, said: “This is so much needed. I loved the idea of new extended opening times and Saturdays will suit me for appointments with my busy working life during the weekdays.”

The health centre accommodates four new GP consulting rooms, a number of treatment areas and a new GP training facility at the two-floor building.
